St Paul's Drama Group

St. Paul's Drama Group was formed by the Young Wives' Group of St Paul's Church, Nork, in 1956 and took its present title when membership was extended to ---men in 1962. From then on it has gone from strength to strength. Taking part in various festivals such as the South East of England Festival of Drama which used to take place at the Harlequin Theatre, Redhill. This was, at the time, a highly prestigious annual event, the only one of its kind in the South East, in which societies throughout the region competed with full-length productions. Even by then St Paul's had an enviable reputation for being accepted into the competition more years than almost any other group. The fact that they won the coveted trophy three times with plays as diverse as the non-stop comedy 'Daisy Pulls It Off', Lorca's tragic 'Blood Wedding' and Rattigan's courtroom drama 'Cause Célèbre' underlines their versatility as well as their ability.

St Paul's have been regulars at other drama festivals and, over the years and have scored successes in the All-England Theatre One Act Festival, and the Norbury and Thornton Heath Drama Associatjon Festival In-the-round (NATHDA). Festival productions have gone on to be presented at the Fairfield Halls, Woking, Hornchurch and Stafford. St. Paul's Drama Group can be found at NESCOT's Adrian Mann Theatre in Epsom, where they put on two productions a year. The Group try to balance their programme between serious plays and comedies or farces. This is well illustrated by this year's programme.

In March 2005 they produced 'Steel Magnolias', and previously, the thriller 'Dangerous Obsession'. St. Paul's have built up a reputation for high quality productions without breaking the bank and have become experts in begging and borrowing, making and mending. Friends and Group members know that a production is in progress when their furniture is being eyed up and measured!
